Cardinals Sign Saunders

The 2010 edition of the Yorkton Cardinals are pleased to announce that another Douglas College player will join the team for the Summer Collegiate season.

Ryan Saunders, a 6'2" 1st baseman/designated hitter, will be in the Cardinal lineup when they open their season May 30th hosting the Regina Red Sox. In 2009 Will Thorp was the first ever Douglas College player to wear the Cardinal colors.

Ryan is a sophomore transfer at Douglas College from Surrey, B.C. At Douglas College he is taking Criminology and aspires to become a police officer after school is over. He transferred from Frank Phillips College in Texas.

Growing up, he played Little League baseball for Kennedy Surrey then went to Whalley Little League where he went on to win 3 Provincial Championships, his last going on further to be a national title at age 18 and represented Canada in 2008 at the Big League World Series in Easley, South Carolina where his team went 2-2 against Germany, Asia-Pacific, Latin-America and Puerto Rico.

Ryan played high school baseball in the BC Premier League for the Fraser Valley Chiefs and wore big leaguer, Chiefs alumni Adam Loewen's #20. Ryan was among league leaders in doubles and average during his two years in the PBL. He has played with and against many current minor league players.

In high school he was also a B.C. Select Invitee as well as a Pacific Northwest Championship Team B.C. member. At L.A. Matheson Secondary School he garnered the Athlete of the Year award twice as well as numerous volleyball awards during his time there.

Ryan is a gap to gap hitter with home run power. He is very dedicated, and loves to work hard. Last year he split summer ball time with the Kelowna Jays as well as the West Coast Cave Ducks. While his freshman year at Frank Phillips College was cut short by injury, he still managed to pick up "Academic All-American" distinction. Ryan is very happy to become a part of the Cardinals, as the WMBL has been on his mind since high school.
